It’s Paranda Time

Paranda in San Pedro Ambergris Caye

In the Garifuna language “paranda” is a dance like chumba and punta. In San Pedro a paranda referred to a group of guys either drinking or serenading to the girls. You have all heard of the serenade or singing romance ballads to the girls at midnight during their sleep. This paranda flashback was a typical scene in old San Pedro village simply chilling out on the beach on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon.  All beaches were free and available for a paranda since hotel and condo development had not arrived to our sandy shores.   By the way, you could also get to pull some coconuts for your favorite cocktail drink. So, do you recognize some of these paranderos in this flashback?

I bet those Sanpedranos knew how to put on a good fiesta. A lot of people knew how to play the guitar back then. Hope they are passing their talent to their children and grandchildren.

Oh yeah, I recognize most of these guys.  There is my Tio Alan Forman and Ovidio Guerrero.  I also see Chico and Mr. Pete Salazar, Betito Marin, Jose Gonzalez and Mr. Nando who I think has passed away. Is that Liborio Gomez?  Great pic Ambergris Today.  I would like to be a parandero.
