What's Up Today, Gerry?
Gerry Hits Belize City Street Art Festival 2012
On a unexpected trip to Belize City, I found myself walking through the busiest street in the city, “Albert Street” and came across that it was closed, but yet very full of life. Tents were all erected and people were decorating and setting up their booths for the Second Annual Street Art Festival, that was taking place on Saturday, February 25, 2012.
Belizeans from around the nation gathered on Albert Street to showcase their talent and creative art work to visitors and locals. The organizers at NICH (National Institute of Culture and History) mentioned to me that last year was the first time the event was introduced to all citizens in Belize and it became an instant success. The purpose of this Festival is to showcase all arts & crafts that exist in Belize and also to unite all Belizeans and support all talented hard working artists.
As I walked further down Albert Street, I came across a very amazing “Street Carpet” as people were calling it. This very impressive team took their time in decorating segment of the street with dyed sawdust and creating shapes and letters in name of the Street Art Festival. There were many paintings from different talented artists as well as gorgeous handmade arts & crafts for many locals and tourists to take home as a fantastic souvenir.
Soon after, a welcome address was given by NICH organizers, welcoming and thanking everybody for their presence and support of this unique and outstanding festival. I was amazed of how many talented and creative people are in my gorgeous country and most of all proud of NICH for coming up with such a brilliant festival to give them all their chance to shine and express themselves. I have to stress out on the ever-popular crowd pleaser “Steel Band” of Belize for adding their musical talent.
I really enjoyed myself and was honored to witness this festival full of art, music, food and beautiful Belizean people. Therefore, mark your calendars for next year and together we can spread the love of art in Belize City. That’s What’s Up Today!
