By Angel Nuñez You know that you are an old timer even when it comes to the way you partook in the Christmas celebrations and traditions.

By Angel NuñezIt was December 2, 1959 and a cold northerly had been blowing for two days. The San Pedro fishermen were bracing for a cold month of December and with it the happy anticipation of a large lobster catch.

By Angel Nuñez “Hey Dad, let’s go fishing? “No my son because when you come out of school at 3:30 p.m. it is already a bit late.” “But Dad, it is May and our summer vacations have commenced.”

By Angel Nuñez Of course I could not miss the opportunity to put on my overall, rubber boots and helmet to be a part of the first ever fire service for San Pedro. This must have been around 1975; I was recently married and looking for new activities besides serenading with my teenage friends and playing the guitar.

The old school was slow and the new school is fast. The old school was simple while the new school is complex or even complicated. This is not about which way is better but rather for the old heads to try to adapt to the new and the new generation to learn that there was another way and it worked.

By Angel Nuñez I think I can say, and with pride, that I am from the old school. This old school built me as I am and I am quite proud of it. Though I can accept the new school, I still do have my preferences as it happened or existed Years Ago in San Pedro.

By Angel Nuñez I was chatting the other day with my good friend Clive Welch and when I mentioned the cinema, he remarked, “I did not know you had a cinema in San Pedro; I thought Paradise Theater was the first one.” Today memories of our beloved cinema flashed back in my mind with much fondness.

By Angel Nuñez In my book, Twenty Five Years Ago, I have a vivid narration of the very first landing of an airplane on Ambergis Caye.  I can easily do so because I was there, or should I say I was here. Incidentally, the very first plane did not touch ground or land on Ambergis Caye, because it was actually a seaplane. Here is a brief account more or less of how it all happened.

By Angel Nuñez The recent unfortunate fire at Ramon’s Village Resort raised a few concerns like “thatch houses are vulnerable to fires” and “why have to resort to a bucket brigade?”  My story today in Twenty Five Years Ago will disprove this.

By Angel Nuñez The national tree of Belize is the mahogany but folks in San Pedro believe that if there were a national tree of Ambergris Caye, it must be the coconut tree.  This is so because the coconut tree has played a big role in the development the Island so much that it was at one time it was the economic base of most early Sanpedranos. A coconut exportation industry ran from early 1900 to as far as 1942 when a hurricane destroyed the industry.

By Angel Nuñez Everyplace you might live in has its tough times and its good times.  Every generation has its tough times and its good times.  Our old San Pedro since it was founded by the Mestizos in 1848 also has had its memorable times- good or bad
