Lobster Fest with Joey Stevens!
Lobster Festival activities kicked off on Monday, June 14, with a “Meat and Greet” Cocktail Party at El Divino (Banana Beach Resort) as Lobster season opened on Tuesday, June 15. Arriving on the island on Sunday, June 13, was celebrity weatherman Joey Stevens and Bob the Parrot of One Caribbean Weather/WSEE TV as they will cover the entire week’s events leading up to the Lobster Fest Block Party on Saturday, June 19 at Central Park.
Broadway in Belize
Sean McDermott Fundraiser for San Mateo In a benefit performance for the San Mateo Road Building Fund, the Paradise Theater presented "An Evening with Sean McDermott" on June 10 and 12. The Broadway star celebrated his musical journey with a collection of songs and stories from his roles on Broadway to starring on television and his European tour with Barbara Streisand.
San Pedro High Graduation
San Pedro High School held its Graduation Mass and Commencement Exercises on Saturday, June 12, at the R. Angel Nuñez Auditorium where 50 graduates were in attendance to receive their diplomas. It was a delightful program with awards and acknowledgements of special recognitions marking the culmination of four years of studies for a very proud group of seniors of San Pedro High.
Celi McCorkle Brings Back Lifetime Achievement Award
Tenth Annual Tourism Awards to honor the “Stars” of Tourism, Blue Water Grill & Xanadu Resort also Awarded Industry representatives, stakeholders, celebrated guests and tourism friends all met at the Belize Biltmore Plaza’s River Hall on Thursday, June 10 with the purpose of accompanying and celebrating the recipients of this year’s Tourism Awards, now in its tenth year.

Student Footbridge into Marco Gonzalez Mayan Site
- Press Release, June 14, 2010 - The Marco Gonzalez Mayan Site at the south end of Ambergris Caye will play host to 23 students starting on June 23. Arriving from the University of London, England, and the University of North Carolina Wilmington, USA, the students will have a treat in store for them when they make the journey into the Mayan Site.
Introducing Miss El Salvador
For La Reina De La Costa Maya The Costa Maya Festival Committee is excited to announce the first contestant for the Reina de la Costa Maya Pageant set for August 5, 2010, kick starting the Costa Maya Festival. Diana Ingrid Martinez Pineda, Miss El Salvador, is the first to send her credentials and pictures to San Pedro. All other seven countries have confirmed their participation at the pageant and the remaining contestants will be announced during the weeks leading up to the pageant.
North Ambergris Police Sub Station Inauguration
After much hard work, dedication and donations, The North Ambergris Caye Neighborhood Watch (NACNW) proudly held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the North Ambergris Police Substation on Saturday, June 5. Sgt. Dominguez and P.C. Lyons of the San Pedro Police Department gave a few remarks on the new substation and both were also grateful for the handing of a new North Police Patrol Truck that was made possible by Special Constable and Justice of the Peace Police Chris Berlin, through his work and the generous donation by north island resident Don Listwin.
Sean McDermott’s Charity Concert
Sean McDermott will once again be performing on Ambergris Caye on June 10 and June 12 at the new Paradise Theatre located just across the bridge at Reef Village Resort at 8pm. He will be donating the proceeds of his performance to San Mateo Road Building Fund to help complete a proper road for San Mateo. The contribution for the performance is $50Bze per ticket. Advance tickets can be purchased at Reef Village Resort lobby. Sean performed in San Pedro about ten years ago and raised $140,000Bze to assist in finishing the Lions Hospital.
Abby Marin Competes Abroad
Fly Fishing Tournament at Teva Mountain Games Colorado Ambergris Today believes that San Pedro has a rising celebrity on its hands. Remember when Abby Marin, of Go Fish Belize, was featured in a short documentary about fly fishing in Belize by Costa sunglasses last year? Well, this year Costa sunglasses sponsored a trip for Abby to participate in the Teva Mountain Games in Vail, Colorado, that took place from June 3 to the 6.
Principal Association of the Cayes
It was on October 2009 that principals on the island joined forces to form an association called the Principals Association of the Cayes (P.A.C). The group’s mission: “To nurture and support all principals to demonstrate the vision, courage, and expertise to lead and advocate for effective learning communities in which all children reach their highest potential.”
Battle Against Oil Exploration Continues
The Search for Black Gold across the length and breadth of the Jewel has raised concerns from a number of environmental organizations that oppose oil prospecting. Island residents are not one bit happy about the oil drilling offshore since in a matter of minutes the Barrier Reef could be damaged if an oil spill occurs. Joining in this concern is the Tour Guide Association’s Chapter in Orange Walk as a current development for oil prospecting is near the heart of a sensitive protected area in the Orange Walk District, the Lamanai Archeological Site.

Guest Editorial To dredge or not to dredge along the coast of Ambergris Caye? - that is the question. Dredging near the beach and for that matter near the reef has been done in the past to facilitate projects of development either for public or private use. Today when the environment is a more sensitive issue, there have been a lot of efforts to minimize dredging almost to a standstill.

Isla Bonita Elementary Student Tops PSE Scores in San Pedro
The Primary School Examination results are out and the students from San Pedro Town did an excellent job! The top scorers this year where Brian Schweigler of Isla Bonita Elementary School (91% - 364/400 points), Andreina Acosta of San Pedro R.C. School (90% - 360/400 points) and Odalys Duarte of SPRC School & Mahe Gonzalez of New Horizon SDA School both with (89% - 356/400 points).

Music Appreciation Lessons by Free Music School Every year Dr. Floyd Jackson offers an inspirational music lesson to the children at each school in San Pedro. The lesson consists of music history, theory, ear training and demonstrations on violin, flute, trumpet, piano and guitar.
Francis Eiley to Release Documentary at Film Fest
On February 19, 2010 Francis (Chino) Eiley released his booked entitled ‘Caged Chronicles’ which is about the cries of injustice that he thought would never end. Seven long years he spent behind prison bars for a crime he did not commit, a time in which he found himself writing many poems that eventually made it into a book as he was set free. From this book now comes a documentary of Francis’ life as he reached out to the world for help when the judicial system seemed to fail him. The documentary is entitled – Chino’s Story.
Botanist working at Marco Gonzalez Island Mayan Site

General Sales Tax Dept. Looks Over Grocery Shops to Protect the Consumers As of April 1, 2010 the Government of Belize raised the General Sales Tax (GST) from 10% to 12.5% and being mindful of the changes in GST Rates and a new list of zero rated items, the General Sales Tax Department is keeping a close eye on grocery shops taking into consideration the consumers so that they are being protected.
S.P. Town Library Holds Essay Reading Competition
The San Pedro Town Library held its 2nd Annual Essay Reading Competition on Wednesday, May 26 at the Rafael Angel Nuñez Auditorium where students from six different schools participated in the competition. Each student was given reading materials which contained approximately 350 words which were to be read at 70 words per minute and read in five minutes.
