Ambergris Today received confirmation that a crew from National Geographic Magazine was on the Island since last week and spent days visiting the Hol Chan Marine Reserve. We are told that the magazine will feature our magnificent marine reserve in an eight page spread early next year. The crew spent countless hours underwater at the Hol Chan Marine Reserve with professional dive and photography equipment making sure that they capture the true essence and beauty that is the Hol Chan Marine reserve, as part of Belize’s Great Barrier Reef.

Alejandro Maldonado is one of the most prestigious yoga instructors in Mexico. Alejandro has had the opportunity to display his classes in Madrid, London, Paris, Miami and especially in México. He has been a trainer for different celebrities in the world, with the most recognizable celebrities in Mexico, Paulina Rubio and Alejandra Guzmán.

Celebrity Weatherman of One Caribbean Weather/WSEE TV to Cover Event San Pedro’s Lobster Fest has been gaining fame and getting bigger and better year after year since the first Lobster Fest in 2007. This year Lobster Fest is set for June 14 to June 20 and it’s going to be HOT, HOT, HOT, as celebrity weatherman Mr. Joey Stevens (and Bob the parrot) of One Caribbean Weather/ WSEE TV will be on the island covering San Pedro’s Lobster Fest.

The Belize Barrier Reef is currently on UNESCO’s list of endangered World Heritage Sites. It now faces another threat, a more serious one at that, since the reef could be permanently removed as a Heritage Site because of licenses granted for oil exploration and drilling. It is comforting to see that some organizations and individuals have stepped up to the plate and expressed their concerns to the Government of Belize about offshore drilling in respect to petroleum concessions that have already been granted for the territory of Belize.

Belmopan - 11 May 2010 - The jurisdiction of the Privy Council to hear appeals from Belize has been abolished with effect from 1st June 2010. This follows from the Orders issued by the Prime Minister, Hon Dean Barrow, to bring into force the Constitution (Seventh Amendment) Act and the Caribbean Court of Justice Act with effect from the said date. These Orders were published in the Belize Gazette dated 1st May 2010.

After news broke about the new underwater project in the Mexico Rocks Area known as Sea Trek, the project has raised more than eyebrows as a group in the community has expressed their concerns of the potential harmful effects to the reef. But the developer of the project, David Gegg, says that he has followed proper procedures to ensure that his new tourist attraction is environmentally safe. An Environmental Compliance Plan (ECP) has been signed by Chief Environmental Officer, Martin Alegria with Gegg, giving the project the green light.

Reports reached our office on Monday, May 10, about a boat that had sunk at the Hol Chan Marine Reserve. Upon making checks with both the Hol Chan Marine Reserve Office and the San Pedro Police Station, we were confirmed that a boat had run aground the reef.

Saturday, May 8, 2010 was a night dedicated to all the beautiful mothers on La Isla Bonita. San Pedro selected and honored Mrs. Leonor Trejo as Mother of the Year 2010. Mrs. Leonor Trejo (67 years old) is happily married to Mr. Ariel Trejo and she is the proud mother of four children: Diana Nuñez, Adi Martinez, Hector Trejo and Griselda Coba. She has 15 Grandchildren. Mrs. Trejo is a proud Sanpedrana and well known for being a part of the church choir at the Roman Catholic Church and her volunteer work with fundraisers for the community.

Residents of La Isla Cariñosa – Caye Caulker Village are upset with the resent incident that occurred on Sunday, May 9, where a police officer shot and killed 31-year-old Alex Goff a Belize City resident. According to reports Goff was at Caye Caulker spending time with childhood friends and on Sunday, May 9 Goff along with Kareem Owen were at the Lazy Lizard Beach Bar & Grill near the split when Goff started behaving disorderly.

Reef Week was celebrated from April 24 to 30 under the theme “Save the Reef Today; Tomorrow Might be Too Late”. Activities started on Saturday, April 24, with the annual Lagoon Reef Eco Challenge while other activities included the Hol Chan Open Day at the Hol Chan office, where students were taught about Hol Chan and the ecosystems it protects.

The Government of Mexico has implemented new rules for foreigners visiting Mexican territory, in order to eliminate requirements and simplify proceedings. These new rules are being applied at all Mexican borders. But Belize City media is reporting that over the weekend many Belizeans were surprised by a new process that caused hours of delays and long lines.

- Press Release - Central America is one step closer to having more pediatric healthcare closer to home after the groundbreaking on May 4 of the first Sanford Children’s international clinic. The clinic in Belize City, Belize will open by the summer of 2011. It will provide pediatric care to the growing population and be designed in a castle theme similar to other Sanford Children’s facilities. Belize population is about 320,000 with 160,000 of them children.
