The Co-Operative

Thousands upon thousands of pounds of lobster tails used to leave this building every year to be exported to the United States of America. The little room upstairs was the fishing cooperative’s first office under its first manager, Mr. Gilberto “Chico” Gomez. Secretary Diana Nuñez Halliday used to make payments to happy fishermen at the end of a day’s hard work. At one corner there were the files of the president of the association, Mr. Geminiano Aguilar. Inside this building there were three huge freezing rooms where succulent lobster tails were frozen rock hard in preparation for the export market. And this concrete slab in front used to run all the way to the lagoon and was the only concrete pathway in the village, so it was every roller skater’s delight. I know roller skating on sand is a bit difficult. Imagine!
