San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, is embarking on a new composting initiative aimed at reducing organic waste and my household will be a part of it. Yay! We are excited to have signed up for the Home Composting program provided by the San Pedro Town Council, in collaboration with Recycle Organics, and the Belize Solid Waste Management Authority.
This project introduced home composting kits to residents that will enable them to transform organic waste into nutrient-rich compost, reducing landfill contributions and promoting sustainability on the island. The initiative aligns with global efforts to mitigate climate change by minimizing methane emissions from organic waste decomposition.
Composting Workshop
The process was simple, we signed up online when the San Pedro Town Council sent out a public invite to join the program; the participants met at the San Pedro Lions Den where the home composting workshop was conducted and at the end received our kits.
We were sent home with the knowledge on what organic products we can and cannot compost, how to separate our organic waste, use the Earth Bin to add and mix our green and brown material, aerate by stirring the compost and when to know its time to reap the benefits of the compost soil that we create. FUN! The crew from Recycle Organics were very friendly, informative and helpful with everyone’s questions. They are also traveling to Corozal Town, Belmopan City, and San Ignacio/Santa Elena Town to set up the Home Composting Pilot Program!
We are removing organic waste from the trash, helping the environment, and creating nutrient-rich compost for our home gardens and plants. This project is a step towards sustainable waste management on the island, helping to minimize landfill waste and promote eco-friendly practices. Happy composting.
