For the past 25 years, Ambergris Today has been documenting the ever-changing landscape of life on Ambergris Caye—celebrating achievements, covering important news, engaging with the community, and fighting to protect our environment. As a journalist, I’ve always preferred to be behind the camera, capturing and sharing the island’s stories. But recently, I stepped out of my comfort zone for something different—being interviewed on The Gringa and Local Belize Podcast with Rachel Jensen and Job Castillo.
The experience was not as nerve-wracking as I expected it to be and I had a lot of fun talking about what I love to do! The episode, appropriately titled “The Ambergris of Today,” was a conversation about everything I’ve come to love and document through the years—our island’s history, rich culture, cherished Carnaval traditions, iconic landmarks, and the unique way of life that makes Ambergris Caye so special. The podcast hosts even jokingly gave me the title of “Historian” for my years of storytelling through Ambergris Today Newspaper; I’m becoming my father.
Beyond reminiscing about the past, I also shared insights into my career as a journalist and the evolution of Ambergris Today. Founded in 1999, our publication started as a print newspaper, but in 2010, we transitioned to an online platform, adapting to the fast-paced digital age. While the format has changed, our mission has remained the same—to deliver positive and community-driven news that celebrates the beauty of our island and its people.

A big part of the discussion was also my family’s passion for travel and environmental conservation. Through iTravel Belize, we have explored Belize and beyond in our camper van, all while advocating for the protection of our reef and fighting against offshore oil exploration. Our home is more than just a tourist destination; it’s a natural treasure worth safeguarding for generations to come.

Dorian: I wish you the best of luck and grateful to having met both your father and you. I have reached the age of 77 and I took the opportunity to sell my place on the lagoon. We are at the end of the airstrip and with all the talk ’bout saving the mangroves and ecosystem…I have found out when money talks, everyone bows. I’ve been coming and going since 1985…so much change, makes my head spin. San Pedro and Belize is running through my veins…and I hope to return as a “tourist”. Your Friend: Bill Thornton, 667=7372
Thank you very much Mr. Bill. I know how much you love our home and country and how frustrating it can be seeing all the changes taking place. We know you won’t be a stranger.
