Every summer, I’m reminded just how amazing our island community can be when we come together for something bigger than ourselves. The Kids in Action Summer Program just wrapped up, and what a summer it has been! Watching these kids finish their diving, snorkeling, and fishing training feels like witnessing the birth of a whole new generation of ocean lovers and protectors.
Kids in Action isn’t just a program, it’s a life-changing experience that has been around for 25 years now! Over three weeks, 75 young students between 12 and 15 years old dove into a world of scuba diving, fly fishing, snorkeling, and marine ecology. This year, Ambergris Today followed them in action, and let me tell you, the excitement and curiosity on their faces said it all. They weren’t just having fun; they were learning skills and building confidence that could shape their future careers.
Kids in Action, A Special Program
What makes this program so special is the heart behind it. It’s run by the Ambergris Caye Fishing Guide Association, the San Pedro Tour Operators Association, and the San Pedro Tourist Guide Association, groups of people who live and breathe the sea. And it wouldn’t be possible without the incredible support from our tourism partners: fishermen, divers, tour guides, dive shops, restaurants, and educators who generously donate their time, resources, and expertise. The educators, in particular, were nothing short of inspiring. Their passion for the kids and for teaching was contagious.
The success of Kids in Action has been so remarkable that the organizers are now looking at modeling the program to be used elsewhere in Belize. Imagine that, a homegrown idea from Ambergris Caye sparking a national movement to teach kids about our oceans and the importance of protecting them!
