Today I had the privilege of being part of something truly special in San Pedro, the very first day of classes at The Island High School, the island’s second high school. It was a milestone not just for education on Ambergris Caye, but also a deeply personal one for me, as my very own nephew and niece walked through those doors as part of the school’s very first freshman class.
To see them starting their high school journey on such a historic day was emotional. I couldn’t help but think how lucky they are to be part of a “first” that will forever be remembered on this island. Years from now, they’ll look back and say, “We were the first class at The Island High School.”
The morning was filled with excitement. New classrooms stood ready, teachers were in place, and the grounds of The Island Academy buzzed with fresh energy. It was more than just the start of a school year, it was the expansion of a vision.
For founder Lady Dixie Bowen, this moment was the perfect way to mark the school’s 30th anniversary, not only celebrating three decades of shaping young minds at The Island Academy, but also opening a new chapter with the launch of its secondary level education. You could feel the pride in the faculty, the staff, and every parent who gathered there today.
As the first group of students, the Class of 2025, settled into their new high school experience, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of pride for my island too. This is more than just a new school; it’s an investment in the future of our children and our community.
Congratulations to The Island Academy, to The Island High School, and especially to that first group of students who made history today. And congratulations to my nephew and niece, I can’t wait to see all the amazing things you’ll accomplish in this new chapter of your lives.
