There was a time when getting certain grocery items on Ambergris Caye meant planning a full trip off the island. If you needed specialty foods, household items, or supplies that simply weren’t available at the local grocery stores, Belize City was the only option. These trips were rarely spontaneous. Locals would plan days in advance, carefully writing shopping lists, coordinating doctor’s appointments, or timing visits with friends and family on the mainland to make the journey worthwhile.
Back in the days stores in San Pedro were few, and inventory was limited. The population was small, tourism was modest, and demand for specialty goods barely existed. In those early fishing village days, my dad often recalled how tedious these trips could be. Travel was slow, especially by sailboats, which took hours to make the journey back and forth. Weather played a major role, and a simple shopping run could turn into a long, exhausting day.

Fast forward to today, and the transformation of the island is impossible to ignore.
With rapid population growth and a booming tourism industry, Ambergris Caye has evolved into a much more self-sustaining community. Demand has increased not just for basic necessities, but for variety, quality, and convenience. As a result, more stores have opened their doors in San Pedro, including several well-known Belizean chain stores that once avoided the island altogether.
Chain Stores Come To San Pedro
For years, chain stores stayed away, largely due to the high cost of transporting goods to the island and the limited customer base. But that equation has changed. With thousands more residents, a steady flow of visitors, and expanding residential and commercial development, the island now presents a strong and attractive market. Goods and services are no longer considered “extras,” they are expectations.
Today, island residents no longer need to make frequent water taxi trips to Belize City just to stock up. The convenience of having these stores right here has significantly improved everyday life. Publics Supermarket offers more affordable and competitive grocery options. Benny’s has made construction materials and home goods far more accessible. Western Dairies now ships fresh dairy products weekly, ensuring consistent supply. Madisco supports local businesses by distributing premium food, beverage, hospitality, and tobacco products. And the newest arrival, Caribbean Tire, brings a full line of motor parts and accessories directly to the island.
This growth reflects more than just convenience. It signals how far San Pedro has come, from a small fishing village dependent on mainland supplies to a thriving island town capable of supporting major retailers and service providers. It also shows confidence from mainland businesses that Ambergris Caye is no longer a secondary market, but a key economic player in Belize.
