Tourists Discover and Enjoy a Classic Belizean ‘Ideal’

Sometimes the simplest things bring the biggest smiles – I recently came across a fun TikTok video of three tourists in Belize discovering something many of us grew up with, the classic Belizean “Ideal.” Watching their curiosity unfold was entertaining as they tried to figure out exactly what they were holding. One of them even referred to it as a “drink,” which made the moment even better.

For Belizeans, of course, there’s no mystery at all.

What they were enjoying for the first time was a Belizean Ideal from Western Dairies, our version of a popsicle. These frozen treats from Western Dairies come in three familiar flavors: chocolate (brown), strawberry (pink), and banana (yellow). Simple, sweet, and refreshing, the Ideal has been a staple treat for generations of Belizean kids and adults alike.

Ideals are typically packaged in small, clear plastic tubes and sold in grocery shops, roadside coolers, and neighborhood stores all across the country. On a hot Belize afternoon, there’s nothing quite like cutting open one of those frozen tubes and enjoying a quick, icy treat.

Origins of the Belizean Ideal

What many people might not know is that the word “Ideal” itself has an interesting history in Belize. Over time, the name became the generic term for these frozen juice or milk-based treats, much like how the word “Popsicle” is used around the world.

Our research into the origin of the name led us to Polar Pak Ideal, a brand associated with the Pollack brothers during the 1980s and 1990s. As the product became widely distributed and loved throughout Belize, the brand name slowly evolved into the everyday word Belizeans now use for any frozen treat in a plastic tube, no matter who makes it.

It’s one of those small cultural details that visitors often discover with delight. For locals, an Ideal is more than just a frozen snack. It’s a childhood memory, a hot-day lifesaver, and a simple taste of Belize that never seems to go out of style. And judging from the reactions in that TikTok video, it looks like visitors are discovering that sweet little tradition too.
