Coral Reef Ed-Ventures Summer Camp is Back!!

The 19th annual Coral Reef Ed-Ventures Summer Camp is returning to Ambergris Caye on Monday, June 25th. The free, fun and educational camp is a collaboration between students from Smith College in Massachusetts, USA and the local Hol Chan Marine Reserve. The camp includes two programs that work to promote the conservation of the Belize Barrier Reef and teach island children about the coral and marine ecosystems.

The 2018 Coral-Ed team is composed of Dana Vera, Emiline Koopman, Liz Nagy, Katherine Akey, Aidan Coffin Ness, and Carla Schwartz who are all looking forward for another exciting and successful summer. The first program, REEF Program, is geared towards students ages 12 and up and is scheduled for June 25th through June 29th. Campers will meet Monday through Friday from 4pm to 6pm at the San Pedro High School. The camp focus is mapping to find the impact of plastic pollution, erosion, and activism in the community. There will be field trips to the beach, mangroves, and reef as a part of mapping expeditions.

The Youth Program runs from Monday, July 2nd to Thursday, July 12th and is open for campers aged 7 to 12. Youth camp will be hosted at SPHS from 9am to 12pm, and will focus on connections. Students will be learning about their own interactions with the ocean and how our actions impact the environment.

To add more fun to the program the team will be hosting two movie nights. Surf’s Up will be shown on June 13th at 7pm and Blue Planet 2 will be shown on July 7th at 7pm, both at the Lion’s Den. Everyone is welcome to the free event and snacks and drinks will be provided.

The program will culminate in a graduation ceremony on Thursday, July 12th at 7pm at the Lion’s Den. Family and friends are welcome and encourage to come to this memorable event.

All interested parents are encouraged to sign their child/children up for the programs. Camp registration forms are available at the San Pedro Town Library on Barrier Reef or at the Hol Chan Marine Reserve Office on Caribeña Street.
