Flashback Friday – Sandy Streets of Town

I remember when some of San Pedro’s sandy streets laid so thick you could barely walk through them properly. Your feet would sink with every step, just like walking along the shoreline, and when the wind picked up you’d get pelted with fine grains of sand straight to the face. The sand would move and shift like tiny desert dunes — piling up overnight, sometimes even covering the entrances to homes and burying fences halfway up before anyone had a chance to sweep it away.

It was messy… but somehow magical.

Those were the days when the island still carried the deep charm of true coastal living, slow mornings, easy afternoons, and the rhythm of village life. Everything felt quieter, gentler. San Pedro wasn’t rushing anywhere yet.

Back then, walking through town really felt like strolling along the beach. All three main streets were basically made of sand, and traffic was almost nonexistent, which meant no potholes to dodge, but also no smooth rides either. Even pedaling your bicycle took some effort, your tires sinking slightly with every push forward.

Sandy Streets were not convenient, but it was simple… and in its own way, perfect.

Today our streets are paved and busy, and progress has clearly rolled in, but every so often, I close my eyes and remember what it felt like to kick through soft sand right in the middle of town, with the sea breeze in my face and nowhere in particular to be.

Oh yes… those were the days.
