Flashback Friday – Cholo’s and Conch Shell Inn

Flashback Friday takes us down one of the most iconic little alleys in San Pedro, the sandy path that led straight to the beach beside the legendary Cholo’s. You can almost feel the stillness of early morning in this photo. The sun is just beginning to rise, casting that golden-orange glow that wraps everything in warmth.

The sea at the end of the alley looks like liquid light, calm and endless, quietly waiting for the day to begin. On the right, the wooden building that housed Cholo’s Bar stands proud, weathered by salt air and time. The simple hand-painted sign hangs out front like a badge of honor. Upstairs wooden railings, downstairs open doorways, no fancy finishes, just solid island character. A small skiff rests in the sand nearby, pulled up after a night of fishing or waiting for the next run out to sea.

On the left, another classic wooden structure (The Conch Shell Inn) frames the alley, with an old hotel sign hanging above, the kind of place where visitors checked in and instantly felt like they’d stepped into something authentic. No paved streets. No manicured sidewalks. Just sand beneath your feet and the Caribbean at the end of the road.

Cholo’s Bar is no more these days, closed a few years back, but doesn’t the alley still look quite quaint?

A man steps out onto the alley barefoot, reaching for a fuel container. Down by the water, two figures stand on the dock, probably preparing for an early fishing trip. There’s no rush, no traffic, no noise beyond the soft lapping of waves and maybe the distant hum of a boat engine warming up.

This was San Pedro when beach alleys were shortcuts to the sea. When bars like Cholo’s were gathering spots for fishermen, travelers, and storytellers. When mornings belonged to the locals and the island felt small enough that everyone knew who was stepping out that door.

It’s easy to see why this image became painting-worthy. It captures more than a location. It captures a feeling. A slower rhythm. A raw and honest beauty that defined the island for so many years. Pure magic at sunrise. And for those who remember walking that sandy path, this photo isn’t just nostalgia, it’s home.
