This Flashback Friday takes us back to the humble beginnings of one of San Pedro’s most recognizable dive operations, Amigos Del Mar. The photo captures what the dive shop looked like in its early days: a simple wooden dock stretching into the Caribbean Sea, a small thatched-roof hut at the end, and a handful of boats tied alongside. It was modest, practical, and perfectly island-style. But more importantly, it was the start of something special.
Established in 1984, Amigos Del Mar was founded by a group of local brothers and close friends who shared a passion for the sea and a dream of introducing visitors to the incredible marine world surrounding Ambergris Caye. At the time, tourism on the island was still in its early stages. Dive operations were small, personal, and built on relationships as much as adventure. Back then, this tiny dock served as the launching point for countless snorkeling and diving trips out to the nearby Belize Barrier Reef, which sits just minutes from the shores of San Pedro.
Visitors would arrive at the beach, step onto this very dock, and head out on small boats to explore coral gardens, vibrant fish, and the famous underwater landscapes that have made Belize a world-class diving destination.
Amigos del Mar Grows Along with San Pedro
What started with little more than a thatched roof and big ambitions has grown into one of the island’s most respected dive operations. Today, Amigos Del Mar is a SSI Diamond Dive Center and SDI Resort Facility, offering full-service diving, training, snorkeling tours, and private boat charters. Located right in the heart of San Pedro Town, it continues to welcome divers and ocean lovers from around the world.
Looking at this old photograph is a reminder of how far the island’s tourism industry has come. In the early 1980s, operations like Amigos Del Mar helped lay the foundation for what San Pedro would eventually become, one of the Caribbean’s premier dive destinations. But despite the growth, the spirit remains the same: local people sharing the beauty of their home with the world.
And it all started right here, on a small wooden dock with a thatched roof and a dream.
