San Pedro AIDS Commission Completes School Fence Beautification Project

Much appreciation is extended to the San Pedro AIDS Commission that embarked in a beautification project on the southernmost section of the San Pedro Roman Catholic School’s fence. The project was completed this week which got rid of the horrible graffiti and revealed beautiful child-friendly messages for the entire community to enjoy.

The fence lies facing an alleyway adjacent to the Sunbreeze Hotel. The passage is used by many who take a short cut between Barrier Reef Drive and access directly in front of the San Pedro Airstrip. The wall was covered with unsightly graffiti, and with extra money to use as part of their educational campaign, the San Pedro AIDS Commission decided to clean up the wall and brighten it with beautiful and positive messages for the community, in part to make awareness of the group’s endeavors of HIV/AIDS awareness.

The project suffered some setbacks as in the process of cleaning up the wall, unknown vandals defaced the newly painted walls with rude and vulgar messages. Nevertheless the SP AIDS Commission members picked up their spirits and continued with the beautification.

President of the San Pedro AIDS Commission, Felix Ayuso, said that the commission decided to beautify the area as they saw how much tourists, locals and children traffic the alley and how much of an eyesore the wall had become.

The Commission hired local artist Pablito Guerrero to paint these child-friendly HIV/AIDS awareness messages to strengthen their educational campaign in the community. The project was kicked off with funds that the Commission raised with their Carnaval Comparsas and it then received assistance from the San Pedro Lions Club and the San Pedro Cancer Society that donated the paint. Assistance was also rendered by ‘He Intends Victory’, The Chocolate Boutique and Laurie Norton (Taco Girl) to start the painting of the logos.

The San Pedro AIDS Commission asks the community to take care of the newly painted walls and to report any vandalism taking place. Support for the Commission’s endeavors is always welcome by contacting 663-9922. For businesses that are willing to donate, a space will be given on the wall to acknowledge their contribution.
