San Pedro Police Department Fortified with Five Vehicles

Being that the San Pedro Police Department only had one working vehicle at one point, today it is proud to boast a new fleet of five additional vehicles that were donated to the department by the Government of Belize and private business sector of Ambergris Caye. The official handing over of the vehicles to the Department took place on Thursday, June 11, 2015.

The Minister of Tourism, Culture and Civil Aviation, Honorable Manuel Heredia Jr, was present for the ribbon cutting ceremony, along with San Pedro’s Mayor, His Worship Mayor Daniel Guerrero. Representatives from the San Pedro Town Council, Belize Tourism Board (BTB), Police Department and private sector partners were also present.

The fleet includes three vehicles and two golf carts. This donation was made possible in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Civil Aviation, Belize Tourism Board, Ministry of National Security, San Pedro Town Council, Mata Chica Beach Resort and Mahogany Bay Village.

Matachica Resort & Spa and GAÏA Riverlodge (Mountain Pine Ridge, Cayo) owner, Daniel Lighter along with Executive Director, Gricel Graniel, became aware of the urgent need for more police vehicles and were delighted to assist by offering an SUV (sports utility vehicle). Meanwhile, Mahogany Bay Village/Caribbean Homes & Exports, delivering a Land Rover which was received by Deputy Mayor Gary Greif earlier this week. Through the Ministry of Tourism, Hon. Manuel Heredia Jr., presented a Toyota, Tacoma Pickup Truck and two Club Car Turf 2 Carry All golf carts.

“It’s an honor to witness and deliver these vehicles to the San Pedro Police Department. Today, with this donation, we have our Police Department, as well as our people at heart. We hope that this donation will serve great purpose in giving back to the community.” stated Honorable Manuel Heredia Jr. in his opening remarks. He went on to say “As we all know, with great progress also comes many problems in society, but in times of need we all come together. When we work together with the private and tourism sectors, great things can be accomplished, and today is a testament to this.”

Mayor Daniel Guerrero provided further good news, “The San Pedro Town Council’s work is ongoing and we have plans to strategically place four fully equipped Police Booths in key areas around San Pedro Town to provide 24 hour security in these areas with the hope of adding an additional four booths in the future.” He also stated that the San Pedro Town Council has secured two more vehicles to be sent to the island in the near future.

The goal of the donation is to add to the mobility of the Police officers and improve response time to distress calls on the island. These vehicles will also improve the range of accessibility for the Police Department in order to further improve safety and security throughout the island.
