Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) is concerned about life-threatening practices of buildings being constructed and people working dangerously close to power lines, following two fatal incidents this year.
Last week, a resident of Independence Village lost his life whilst trimming a tree near high voltage power lines. Similarly, in June, a construction worker was electrocuted in Placencia whilst working near high voltage power lines. The Company extends condolences to the families who lost their loved ones due to these extremely tragic incidents.
BEL is pleading to the public to desist from constructing structures and planting trees near power lines.
The Company is also imploring the public to take heed of the following precautions:
*When planning to construct or work within 15 feet of a power line, always contact BEL for guidance before commencing.
*Do not plant trees in the path of overhead power lines.
*Do not trim trees that are growing over or into overhead power lines; instead, contact BEL for assistance.
*Be cautious when installing roofing, rain gutters and equipment such as TV antennas and satellite dishes. Make sure these items cannot fall into or make contact with nearby power lines.
*Do not touch any item that is in contact with a power line; instead, contact BEL for assistance.
Always call BEL at 0-800-235-2273 when in doubt or if you need assistance.
