Earth Day 2018 Marks Countdown to Phase Out of Single-Use Plastics

Oceana Belize, April 22, 2018 – Earth Day is an annual event celebrated on April 22nd. Each year Earth Day is celebrated under a theme, and this year’s theme is simple: End Plastic Pollution. There’s no question that plastic pollution is poisoning our oceans and land, injuring marine life, and affecting our health! This couldn’t come at a better time for Belize with the government’s recent announcement to phase out of single use plastic shopping bags, Styrofoam and plastic food utensils by Earth Day 2019!

Worldwide, various events are held to demonstrate support for environmental protection. First celebrated in 1970, Earth Day events in more than 192 countries are now coordinated globally by the Earth Day Network ran by president Kathleen Rogers.

The Oceana Belize team and Wavemakers will be joining in this year to celebrate Earth Day and take a stand for our environment. Cleanup campaigns, mural painting, as well as tree planting activities will be carried out in various communities countrywide.

“The announcement of the phase-out of single use plastic and styrofoam by the Government of Belize builds momentum and enthusiasm for activities around this year’s Earth Day, notes Oceana’s Outreach Director, Jacinta Gomez. “Oceana continues to support and encourage a transition to green alternatives through our education and outreach efforts”.
