Saga Humane Society has recently moved to a new location on Seagrape Drive, marking an exciting new chapter for animal welfare on Ambergris Caye. What was once “Fort Dog” has been transformed into a comprehensive center for operations, sheltering, and medical care. The larger facility allows Saga to offer improved services, providing better living conditions for animals and enhancing medical support.
The transition has been a long process, involving two years of planning and the support of dedicated donors and volunteers. The new space is designed not just as a shelter but as a hub for education and outreach. This will help address animal neglect and unwanted pets on the island. Saga Humane Society plans to offer educational programs on responsible pet ownership, including the importance of spaying, neutering, and vaccinations.
It was kinda of chaotic when we visited, with a handful of workers are still adding the final touches to the building, all while the staff tended to all the customers walking in. But everyone at Saga was working with a big smile knowing that all their hard work has paid off and that they are now offering even better services to the community in much improved working conditions and environment.
Saga Humane Society’s Commitment
Founded in 1999, Saga Humane Society remains committed to kindness and preventing cruelty. Their efforts extend beyond sheltering animals, with continued free vaccination campaigns and affordable veterinary services. President Dr. Heather Braha emphasized that having a dedicated facility will allow Saga to better serve the San Pedro community.
“Saga would not be where it is today without the help from everyone who as supported us since day one,” commented Saga’s President Dr. Heather Braha. “Saga’s transition to the new building has been supported by donations and fundraising efforts, with significant contributions from the local community demonstrating their support for Saga’s mission.
The move represents a positive shift for animal welfare and a strengthened connection with the community. Saga’s team, both staff and volunteers, are energized by this new beginning, driven to promote a compassionate culture for animals across Belize.
