The tragic death of Jennifer Dawn Hernandez serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of safety and responsibility when operating golf carts or any vehicle. Hernandez, a visitor to Belize, lost her life in a devastating accident on Friday, December 6, 2024, near Secret Beach Road, Ambergris Caye, Belize.

The incident occurred around 4 p.m. as Hernandez and her partner, Jeremy Flores, were traveling on a golf cart. Reports indicate that the cart hit a bump, ejecting Hernandez from the vehicle. Despite efforts by first responders, she succumbed to her injuries. Following an investigation, Flores was arrested and charged with reckless driving, driving without due care and attention, and causing death by careless conduct. Authorities also suspect alcohol consumption was involved, with Flores refusing to provide a specimen for analysis.

Drinking/Driving Accidents and Golf Cart Safety

This heartbreaking event underscores the dangers of driving under the influence and the need for caution when operating golf carts, which are a common mode of transport in San Pedro. Golf carts may seem less hazardous than cars, but careless operation, speeding, and impaired driving can lead to fatal consequences.

To ensure the safety of yourself and others:

  1. Never drink and drive: Alcohol impairs judgment and slows reaction times, significantly increasing the risk of accidents.
  2. Drive responsibly: Always adhere to speed limits and be vigilant for uneven terrain, especially on unpaved roads.
  3. Respect the rules of the road: Treat golf carts as you would any other vehicle, following traffic laws and operating with care.

Jennifer’s death is a tragedy that could have been avoided. Let her story be a call to action for all of us to prioritize safety, act responsibly, and ensure that such accidents are not repeated.
