A fresh new look for the Belize currency notes has been unveiled today, marking a historic change that celebrates the nation’s identity while reinforcing its economic stability. The new notes, which will be introduced around June or July, feature the images of two of Belize’s national heroes: George Cadle Price and Phillip Goldson. These designs honor their legacy as proud, fearless Belizeans who contributed significantly to the country’s development.
Central Bank Governor Kareem Michael emphasized the significance of the change, stating that the new notes reflect Belizean pride. However, he was quick to reassure the public that while the designs have changed, the value of the currency remains the same. A Belize dollar is still equivalent to two Belize dollars per U.S. dollar, maintaining the exchange rate and the stability of the country’s currency.
The decision to remove the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II aligns Belize with other Commonwealth nations transitioning away from featuring the British monarchy on their currency. This move is a testament to Belize’s evolving identity and independence, showcasing its own heroes on its notes.
Belize Currency Boasts Modern Aesthetic
Prime Minister John Briceño praised the updated design, calling it “a beautiful note.” He highlighted the modern aesthetic and enhanced security features that aim to prevent counterfeiting, ensuring that the new notes are both visually appealing and technologically advanced.
“This is something Belizeans will embrace,” Briceño added. “It’s our people on our note.”
The new currency notes symbolize not only a change in design but a celebration of Belizean heritage and a continued commitment to economic stability.
