San Pedro’s John Greif II Municipal Airport has undergone a significant transformation, thanks to a $3.7 million investment aimed at improving safety, efficiency, and overall operations. The Belize Airports Authority (BAA), in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism, private sector partners including Maya Island Air and Tropic Air, and a grant from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), spearheaded the much-needed upgrades to accommodate growing air traffic and enhance the airport’s capabilities.
Enhanced Safety & Infrastructure for Airport

One of the most critical upgrades is the complete resurfacing and rehabilitation of the runway, ensuring smoother take-offs and landings. The addition of a holding bay has improved aircraft movement, making operations more efficient, especially during peak hours.
To further boost safety, modern LED runway and taxiway lights have been installed, allowing for better visibility during nighttime operations. These upgrades are particularly important as the airport moves toward facilitating late-night flights and emergency nighttime medical evacuations.
Another key improvement is the installation of thermoplastic runway markings, which provide better durability and visibility for pilots. Additionally, a reinforced perimeter fence now surrounds the airport, enhancing security by preventing unauthorized entry and ensuring safer conditions for both passengers and aircraft.
New Lighting System for Safer Landings

As part of the modernization efforts, the Precision Approach Pathway Indicator (PAPI) Lighting System is being installed. This state-of-the-art system will serve as a visual aid for pilots during landing, helping to improve approach accuracy and overall flight safety.
A Commitment to Growth

The upgrades at John Greif II Municipal Airport reflect the Belize Airports Authority’s broader initiative to improve aviation infrastructure nationwide. As San Pedro continues to experience a surge in tourism and real estate development, these enhancements will play a crucial role in meeting the increased demand for air travel.
With a safer, more modernized airport, residents and visitors alike can now enjoy a more efficient and reliable travel experience, reinforcing San Pedro’s position as one of Belize’s top destinations.
