The hijacking incident involved a U.S. national, Akinyela Sawa Taylor, who attempted to commandeer the flight at knife-point, injuring three individuals before being fatally shot by a licensed passenger. The plane, en route from Corozal to San Pedro, was forced to circle for nearly two hours before landing safely at Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport .

Tropic Air’s CEO, Maximillian Greif, praised the actions of the crew and passengers, stating that their courage and quick thinking were instrumental in preventing a greater tragedy. The airline has since implemented stricter security measures to enhance passenger safety.
