This week, officials from the Ministry of Transportation rolled up their sleeves and sat down with local traffic committees in Caye Caulker and San Pedro to talk about something that affects all of us: island traffic. Dr. Louis Zabaneh, Minister of Constitution and Religious Affairs, Indigenous Affairs, and Transportation, along with CEO Chester Williams, led the conversations to get a clear picture of the traffic problems locals face every day. The goal? Hear directly from the people dealing with it and come up with realistic solutions.
Also at the meetings were key players from the Ministry and the Ministry of Local Government, including Chief Transport Officer Leon Gentle, Deputy Chief Peter Williams, Policy Director Anna Loague, and Local Government Director Clifford King.
Traffic committee members from both islands had the chance to speak up, sharing the real challenges of managing traffic on growing islands like Caye Caulker and Ambergris Caye. They offered insights and on-the-ground perspectives that the officials took seriously.
Committed to Traffic Alleviation

“We’re committed to working hand-in-hand with our island communities to find practical, long-term solutions,” said Minister Zabaneh. “The input we got from both committees is incredibly valuable and will help shape future plans to reduce congestion and make getting around safer and easier.”
Next steps? The Ministry will take what they learned and start putting together a set of recommendations. These will aim to ease traffic flow, boost safety, and promote smarter, more sustainable transportation on both islands. The Ministry says it remains focused on improving transportation systems across Belize to better serve residents and visitors alike.
