Teens’ Opinion on Homosexuality

Homosexuality is romantic or sexual attraction or behavior between members of the same sex or gender. As a sexual orientation, homosexuality refers to “an enduring pattern of or disposition to experience sexual, affection, or romantic attraction primarily or exclusively to people of the same sex. It also refers to an individual’s sense of personal and social identity based on those attractions, behaviors expressing them, and membership in a community of others who share them. Most people discriminate homosexual being! This week I decided to ask my fellow teens about how they feel about homosexuality; this is what they had to say:

Deandra – I don’t hate it … it’s what people choose to become… that’s their life… no judgment!

Kevin – Homosexuality has been around for a long time before it was known about. Recently it has become such a big deal since society has started to respect and legalize their actions around the world. From my point of view I have a respect for homosexuality, but in my eyes that is wrong although it has become legal and so common now. I have no hatred or am I disgusted by their presence or anything like that, like other people may be. I have had friends who are “gay” and “lesbians” and those are some of the most beautiful friends you can have once both respect each other. Despite this I would not support their actions or them at all. I may contradict myself at some points but I guess it’s because it is so confusing dealing with a topic that is still very taboo and hard to understand and talk about.

Maite – I believe it’s the person’s decision to be that and I think it’s not something that should be hidden; everyone has a right to express himself; so I’m cool with it!

Ismael – I believe that God gave each and every one a personal conscious to choose from wrong or right. I don’t stereotype any one from their sexual orientation. Everybody indulging in this confusion and I advice them to seek help because the right path i.e. being straight is attainable.

Anonymous – What I think about homosexuality is that each individual has the right to love someone. It does not matter how they are or how they look, what their race is or sex. Everyone deserves to be happy and developing feelings for your same sex is something you cannot control.

Gina – I believe that it doesn’t matter what sexual orientation we are; we are all equal!

The opinions of teenagers is varied, as you can appreciate from the responses. I feel that definitely we need more education and orientation in this topic. We need pastoral advice.  We need to get the church’s point of view.  We need doctors to speak to the teenagers. And most importantly I see the need to orient teens on the society’s position on homosexuality and how it affects families and society.
