YOU KNOW YOU ARE AN OLD TIMER SANPEDRANO IF
You ate hot flour tortillas or Johnny cakes with re-friend beans and fried fish for breakfast and probably the same thing for evening tea. (supper)
YOU KNOW YOU ARE A MODERN SANPEDRANO IF for breakfast there is a choice of scrambled eggs, ham, bacon, re-fried beans, pancakes with syrup, or some cereal with milk.
YOU KNOW YOU ARE AN OLD TIMER SANPEDRANO IF
You chew up your chicken bone. I’m serious. After eating the flesh off the leg or thigh, most old timers would chew up the bone to savor whatever is inside the bone. You see chicken was not a popular food back then. It was eaten on special occasions so you had to enjoy it “To The Bone”.
YOU KNOW YOU ARE A PRESENT DAY OR MODERN SANPEDRANO IF you eat chicken with a knife and fork and you leave quite a lot of flesh on the bone. Note: The other day my Aunt Mickey at Mickey’s Place asked me if I had enjoyed my lunch. I showed her the bones in my plate and she got the message when she saw the bones that were naked of any flesh.)
YOU KNOW YOU ARE AN OLD TIMER SANPEDRANO IF
You remember going to the neighborhood store and got things on credit.( Credit meant getting goods with an agreement to pay later) The shopkeeper used to mark it on a piece of paper or an exercise book and dad used to go and pay at the end of the month.
YOU KNOW YOU ARE A MODERN SANPEDRANO BECAUSE you go to the store and the shopkeeper no longer gives goods on credit. You pay with a credit card or a debit card. You don’t even have to carry money on your wallet!
YOU KNOW YOU ARE AN OLD TIMER SANPEDRANO IF
You used to get birthday greetings only on Radio Belize. That was the only radio station in Belize and Sanpedranos used to tune in almost religiously to two programs. The first was Rincon Infantil with Lidia Ramirez, and the second was El Retorno de Seferino, with comedian and radio personality Seferino Coleman.
YOU KNOW YOU ARE A MODERN SANPEDRANO BECAUSE you have many radio stations including two local ones ( soon to have three) to tune in to and you get your birthday requests and greetings mostly through the computer on Facebook.
So how do they two customs compare. Do you like the old timer’s customs or the modern?
