El Salvador State Officials Explain New Immigrations Laws to El Salvador Community in San Pedro
On Saturday, March 19, 2011, members of the Salvadoran community in San Pedro, Ambergris Caye hosted members of the Cabinet of El Salvador at La Divina Providencia where they shared new laws that are being implemented to protect the Salvadorians living out of their country all over the world.
With a population of about 2,000 Salvadorans living in San Pedro, it was Siegfried Reyes and Francisco Merino, Vice President and Legislative Assembly respectively, second location of visit during their tour of disclosure of the “Special Law for the Protection and Development of Salvadoran Migrants and their Families.”
As part of the objectives of the trip, both Reyes and Merino listened to the Salvadoran members’ needs and concerns about the new legislation that ensures the benefits of migrants, by highlighting the Salvadoran community concerns in education, migration and identity.
Concerns expressed by the Salvadoran Community in San Pedro to the board members included: the creation of an educational project for children of Salvadorans in Belize to continue their studies in El Salvador, through the validity or assimilation of academic record between the two countries and a program that allows them to obtain the single identity document (DUI) for the completion of legal formalities abroad and to identity and immigration assistance programs.
President Reyes assured that these concerns and suggestions will be delivered to the proper authorities in El Salvador and manage a quick solution. He further explained that the new law already provides some help such as immigration assistance programs and tax incentives for Salvadorans who wish to return and invest in El Salvador. He also noted that this is the beginning of a comprehensive protection policy and an advanced law that responds to the aspirations of the Salvadoran migration across the world.
