Belize can proudly celebrate one of its own as Jonathan Martinez Poole took on and conquered IRONMAN Wales on Sunday, September 21, 2025, one of the toughest full-distance triathlons in the world. Born in Caye Caulker and raised in the UK, Jonathan Martinez carried his Belizean heritage with pride as he crossed the finish line in 13 hours and 46 minutes, completing a course that pushes even the strongest athletes to their limits.
The grueling IRONMAN Wales course in Tenby, Pembrokeshire, is known for its brutal climbs and relentless hills. Jonathan faced it all head-on, completing:
- 3.8 km Swim in Carmarthen Bay
- 180 km Bike Ride through the breathtaking but unforgiving Pembrokeshire Coast National Park
- 42.2 km Run through Tenby’s medieval streets and along its beachfront

IRONMAN Wales is as much a mental battle as it is physical and Jonathan’s perseverance proved that true. Competing under his Belizean roots, he made not only his family, friends, and the Royal Air Force proud, but also his entire country of birth, Belize. Congratulations, Jon, on this extraordinary achievement! You’ve shown what endurance, determination, and Belizean spirit can accomplish on one of the world’s most challenging stages. 🇧🇿💪
