San Pedro’s 41st Township Day celebration carried an extra spark this year as the community gathered at Central Park to unveil a beautifully repainted San Pedro Sign, now transformed into a vibrant mural that captures the heart and soul of La Isla Bonita.
What was once a familiar landmark is now a vibrant canvas, painted directly onto each letter, showcasing the island’s culture, natural beauty, and marine wonders. The project is the highlight of this year’s Township Day festivities, honoring San Pedro’s journey from a small fishing village to Belize’s tourism powerhouse.
A Gift from San Pedro’s Artists
The San Pedro Town Council officially dedicated the revamped sign during an evening ceremony, recognizing the impressive work of four local artists: Ms. Elvie Staines (lead designer), Mr. Papo Alamilla, Ms. Karissa Vasquez, and Mrs. Sophie Lisbey.
Well-deserved praise was given to the team of artists, noting that the sign now stands as a “symbol of our identity, our culture, and our love for this island.” Special acknowledgment went to Elvie Staines, whose vision guided the entire design and who infused each letter with meaning and intention.
San Pedro Sign Tells Our Story

Representing the team, Elvie shared the inspiration behind the piece: Every letter holds its own tribute, marine life, reef scenes, cultural motifs, island traditions, and that unmistakable San Pedro energy that makes this place so magical.
“From the start, my goal was to create something that truly reflects the identity and spirit of our island,” she said. “Every image was chosen with intention to celebrate the richness and diversity of our home.”
Elvie also expressed heartfelt gratitude to her fellow artists, the San Pedro Town Council, Mayor Núñez, the project coordinators, and the entire community. “It has been a privilege to contribute to a piece that represents all of us,” she shared. “I hope this sign fills both residents and visitors with pride.”
Honoring Our Past, Celebrating Our Future
Deputy Mayor Ernesto Bardalez reflected on the significance of the new sign in his remarks, honoring San Pedro’s pioneers and reminding the community of their shared responsibility:
“To our artists, thank you for putting our story into color. As we celebrate Township Day, let us remember our pioneers and commit to protecting our reef, our culture, and our community so that San Pedro remains a place we are proud to call home.”
The evening closed with reminders of unity and appreciation. The updated sign isn’t just a photo spot, it’s a testament to collaboration, creativity, and island pride.
A Township Day to Remember
As the town continues to grow and evolve, the freshly painted San Pedro Sign stands as a bright reminder of where we came from, and the vibrant spirit that continues to carry us forward.
Happy 41st Township Day, San Pedro!
Que Viva La Isla Bonita.
