Politics in Belize is rarely dull, and this elections cycle is proving to be no exception. Manuel Heredia Jr., a familiar name in Belize Rural South, has officially announced his return to electoral politics as the United Democratic Party’s (UDP) Standard Bearer for the upcoming General Elections on March 12, 2025. However, here’s where things get interesting—Dani Lagha is also running as the UDP’s Standard Bearer for Belize Rural South.

Yes, you read that right. If both candidates remain in the race, voters will see two UDP candidates on the ballot. This unprecedented scenario is a direct result of the ongoing leadership battle within the UDP, with Shyne Barrow and Tracy Panton each pushing their own candidates across constituencies. Heredia is aligned with Panton, while Lagha is running under Barrow’s faction.

What does This Mean for Belize Rural South?

With the UDP split in two, Belize Rural South voters could face a confusing election day. Alongside Heredia and Lagha under the UDP banner, the ballot will also feature Hon. Andre Perez representing the People’s United Party (PUP) and Abner Bacab running for the Belizean Justice Movement.

The bigger question is—will this be Manuel Heredia’s grand comeback? With four terms as Area Representative (2003, 2008, 2012, and 2015) and a long stint as Minister of Tourism (2008–2020), he certainly has the political experience and name recognition. His re-entry into the race is seen as a strategic move for the UDP’s Panton faction as they attempt to solidify their footing in the election.

Meanwhile, Andre Perez Stands Firm

While the UDP remains in disarray, PUP’s Hon. Andre Perez is running on a strong record, highlighting his efforts to strengthen Belize’s Blue Economy, protect coastal ecosystems, improve infrastructure, and enhance essential services in San Pedro and Caye Caulker. He remains confident in his re-election bid, stating:

“It’s been an honor to serve the wonderful people of Belize Rural South as their area representative. At the same time, it is also an honor to serve in Cabinet as a minister, and I am grateful to Prime Minister Hon. John Briceño for his confidence in me. To my beautiful, hardworking people of Caye Caulker and San Pedro Ambergris Caye, I stand ready to continue serving you with humility and dedication. March 12th is Election Day, and I humbly ask you for your support. Vamos Bien! Right Pan Track!”

The Road to Elections

With just a month left before Belizeans head to the polls, the political landscape in Belize Rural South is more fractured than ever. Can the UDP unify before March 12, or will their divided house cost them the election? One thing is certain—the race is heating up, and all eyes will be on how this political drama unfolds.
