My Travelling Feet took me to Caye Caulker a couple weeks back; I believe it had been a year since my last trip to the Isla Cariñosa. Waiting for our boat to take me back home to Ambergris Caye, I sat at the foot of the dock taking in the village life of the island. It was Saturday afternoon, Rainbow Grill and Bar was packed with tourists but the rest of the island was quiet.
There was a man in a chef uniform selling food on the street-side, a couple locals sitting by the sea shore, backpackers walking to a nearby hostel and a man selling local souvenirs while he slept on his hammock. Yes, he could get away with sleeping on the job on the side of the street without having his products stolen. Not in San Pedro anymore! LOL.
Then it got me thinking if I could adopt the “Go Slow” motto of the Caye Caulker residents. I always talk about the good ole days of San Pedro when the streets were sandy, the traffic was close to non-existent and you could leave your doors unlocked to go buy at the corner store. I always wish I could turn back time and experience San Pedro like in my younger years.
You see, everything slows down in Caye Caulker, much like what San Pedro was 25 years ago. But after spending that quiet afternoon on the island I started thinking, “Is this what I want? It might be too SLOW for me!” Hmm, Yeah! Maybe I have gotten accustomed to the ‘city’ life of San Pedro – the fast-paced days of tourism and commerce that drives this small, yet gigantic island by the Caribbean Sea. 🙂
I have grown along with what the island has become – a thriving meca of tourism and a top destination of my beloved country. I am definitely so proud of what my community has to offer and appreciate all the sacrifices our residents have made to get to where we are now.
But I guess Caye Caulker is to me what San Pedro is for our tourists who come to escape the fast-paced living of the concrete jungle. And although San Pedro has turned into a bustling town that rivals city life, you can still get away from it all. Step away from downtown and you too can Go Slow in San Pedro. Once you are on the beach you can’t even hear the traffic in town and if you find a secluded one north or south of town, even better.
So I believe that anybody can go as Fast or as Slow as he or she chooses to here in San Pedro, Ambergris Caye. No offence to my neighbors in Caye Caulker; I love the place and it is definitely a place I will continue visiting when I’m looking to relax. Go Slow, such a great motto to live by…
