Spiny Lobster's Popularity

The spiny lobster season is officially open for the next nine months and naturally San Pedro had a blast at the Seventh Annual Lobster Festival.  But did you know that way back in the 1960’s, it was the spiny lobster along with our reef, beach and people that attracted some of the first tourists to our Island? To tell the truth we did have some very huge lobsters back in those days.  One pound lobster tails were common in those days as fishermen returned with their catch from Glover’s Reef and Turneffe and other cayes down southern Belize.   Two pound lobster tails were also brought.  They were indeed huge and if there was a lobster fest back then, they would probably have to be sold for 100 dollars each.
