Tribute to Soccer Veteran Players

Prior to the final games of the 11-a-side competition, the San Pedro Sports Council paid tribute to a special group of people who has definitely left their mark in the world of sports in San Pedro. Councilor Pablo Ico, Mayor Elsa Paz and the Sports Council handed out special recognition plaques to 16 special individuals who have dedicated their lives to enhancing the world of sports on the island, in particular football (soccer).

These 16 men were honored as each was handed out a special plaque which symbolized their commitment to sports development. Most of the men are veterans in the sport of soccer and have greatly given much of their lives to the promotion, development and enhancement of sports, including fundraising, participating and coaching. The 16 men honored on Sunday, January 11 were:

Samuel Gonzalez
Ruben Gonzalez
Raul “Coco” Gonzalez
Juan Diaz

Eloy Gonzalez
Freddy Gonzalez
Guillermo “Cholo” Nuñez
Fulgencio “Fullí” Hoare
Jose Borges

Upon receiving his plaque, Mario “Chapin” Jurado explained how honored he was to receive this recognition. “I am really happy today as this is the first time I have been given recognition of this kind,” he stated. “This is a wonderful thing, I feel very proud and grateful for this award.”

Special recognition for his commitment to sports was given to Mr. Efrain Guerrero and the Sports Committee extend special thanks to the following businesses and people who sponsored the event – San Pedro Town Council, Hon. Manuel Heredia Jr., Reef Village, Mr. & Mrs. Ellis Eiley, Alex Eiley, Caribbean Depot, Suya’s Tour, Gecko Graphics, Fido’s Restaurant & Bar, La Playa Lounge, Captain Shark’s, Caramba Restaurant, Elito Arceo, Manuel DelValle and Premium Wines and Spirits.
