Holy Cross Anglican School Celebrates Belizean Culture

Holy Cross Anglican School celebrated Belize Culture Day and Garifuna Settlement Day On Thursday, November 18.  In spite of the rain, spirits were high; Students and teachers had worked for weeks creating displays and demonstrations while making posters and collecting related materials.  Five of the major ethnic groups which comprise the Belizean society were highlighted – the Creole, Garifuna, Maya, Mestizo and East Indian.  The School also held a reenactment of the Garifuna landing in Belize 178 years ago.

The displays were judged based on display, information, creativity and presentation by Amy Leiva of the Belize Tourist Board, Iraceli Acosta from the Town Library and Councilor Joe Elijio of the San Pedro Town Council.   The judges had a difficult time making their decision but in the end the Garifuna Culture Exhibit was rated #1.

Much thanks to the judges, parents and friends of Holy Cross for supporting this exciting day.  Special thanks go to The Belize Bank for providing prizes for the students in cultural attire.
