The Belize Airports Authority held a ground breaking ceremony on December 16, 2010 to begin the rehabilitation and upgrade of the John Greif II Airport (San Pedro Airport). Eight months later work on this project has finally commenced.
Ambergris Today contacted Mr. Kenworth Tillet, General Manager of the Belize Airport Authority, who stated that after much delay work has finally commenced in the upgrading of the John Greif II Airport. “Construction of the fence has commenced on the airstrip and is being carried out by local contractor Armando Graniel of Graniel’s Construction,” commented Mr. Tillet. “The project is expected to take about three to five months for completion.”
“We would like to remind the public to take caution in this area of construction and also remind that walking across the runway is an offence and those caught can be fined up to $500 or be imprisoned for six months,” stated Mr. Tillet.
The 3.1 million dollar project is a cooperative effort between the Belize Airports Authority and Corporación Centroamericana de Servicios de Navegación Aeréa (Central American Corporation for Air Navigation Services – COCESNA). Work on the project will be spearheaded by Anthony Thurton and Associates, hired to produce the architectural design and see the project through to completion. The upgrading of the landing strip and adequate lighting among other upgrades will be done Rodler Construction of Ladyville.
New features of the airstrip will include an upgraded landing strip, security fencing, larger parking area for private aircrafts, adequate lighting for emergency night-landings and a general enhancement of the safety and security features on the compound.
