Successful Fundraiser for Liberty Children’s Home

It was another successful fundraising effort that the island community put together for the Liberty Children’s Home in Belize City. It’s an annual event on the island that has proven very successful to send much needed aid for the children’s home. The fundraiser was held at Pedro’s Inn this past Sunday, December 11, 2011.

“It was a success; we raised $18,000,” commented Ms. Delfina Mitchell, director at Liberty Children’s Home to Ambergris Today. “A portion will be used to pay our electrical bill for the next few months, Christmas bonus for the staff and presents for the kids. Peter Lawrence will fly in on Christmas morning and will present the children with their presents as Santa Claus!” Now that is a sight!

Ms. Delfina arrived on the island on Sunday along with staff members and children of the home. They were delighted to see all the activities planned for the day. The children had so much fun swimming in the pool at Pedro’s, blowing bubbles, working the hula hoop and jumping rope.

Thanks to the efforts of Peter Lawrence, Ms Diane Campbell and Friends of LCH, the special visit to the island and the fundraiser were made possible. Walter Medina manned the BBQ and there was entertainment by Tull, Valentino Caliz, Barefoot Skinny and even Coconut Leo; it was an open microphone for anybody to join the fun. Other fundraising efforts included a silent Chinese Auction and raffles.

The San Pedro Lions Club was also present at the fundraiser where they presented a check to the Home to the sum of $300 and a separate donation collected from the Lion members.

According to Ms. Mitchell, the Liberty home is always in need of financial assistance and it relies heavily on donations, which have been slow at the moment. Donations are not restricted to cash only, the Home is happy to receive food items in order to feed the children and items that can be used to properly run the Home. The San Pedro Fundraiser will surely come in handy during the Holiday Season.

Liberty Children’s Home is licensed to house 40 children who come through the Department of Human Services. Twenty three children between the ages of 2 and 14 are housed at the moment at Liberty, all up for adoption.

Anybody interested in adopting or providing for a child can contact the Department of Human Services. For further information in assisting Liberty Home you can call 225-2158 or 624-3696 or visit their website: http://www.libertychildrenbelize.org.
