Tons of Seaweed Pile Up on San Pedro Beaches

Have you taken a stroll down the beach lately? If so, you must have noticed the huge amount of seaweed that has washed ashore and is practically covering our beaches. It is not all that appealing as the seaweed blocks access to swimming areas, looks a bit dirty and eventually does not smell so good when it is decaying in the hot sun. The good thing is that working crews of both local businesses and the Town Council are clearing it all up.

So what is causing all this seaweed to wash up in masses on our beautiful shore? Recent articles have been mentioning that it all has to do with the current changing weather and temperature patterns.

It is anticipated that the masses of seaweeds could increase as more tropical storms are predicted for this hurricane season. Scientists say that it is possible that climate change could be indirectly responsible for the increase of this particular weed which is currently affecting many global coastlines.

The tourism industry in the Caribbean could be impacted as they primarily come to our beautiful island to enjoy the sun, sea and sand. But with the strong winds washing ashore so much seaweed the tourists will have a difficult time trying to access a clean beach.

Many hotel workers are out very early cleaning up the beaches and their work goes throughout the day as there is a mass amounts to clean up. Workers tend to pick up as much as 85 to 100 carts full of seaweed a day.

The seaweed does have its pro’s and con’s, it does make the beaches look a bit dirty but it is also used for beach reclamation and landfill purposes. It just takes a bit of hard work.

Apart from our beautiful island being invaded by the masses of seaweed, other parts of the Caribbean have also been taking a toll with the seaweed. And if in fact more seaweed is said to increase with the approaching hurricane season, the entire community should take responsibility to help and clean up the beaches.

Yes, the Town Council should be responsible for the up keep of our beaches but if we all work hand in hand and not depend or wait for someone to clean up the mess for us, our beaches should be clean in no time. All it takes is for all of us to have some civic pride, pick up a rake, call some friends and have a beach clean up!
