Belmopan Brothers Drown in River

The Labor Day Holiday, May 1, 2012, in Belize became a tragic one for a Belmopan family as two brothers drowned in the Belize River along the Banana Bank area after they decided to take a dip at a very popular swimming spot.

The shocking news took San Pedro residents by surprise as one of the victims, known to everybody as Ozzi, was a one-time resident of Ambergris Caye and a very good friend to many islanders. Twenty six year old Osbourne Grant and brother thirty two year old Allyson Thimbriel Jr. drowned on Tuesday, May 1, 2012, shortly after they decided to take a swim in the river after a day of work at a farm in the Valley of Peace. The river’s current proved to be too strong and both brothers were swept away.

Efforts to rescue the two brothers were futile as two other of their friends were also swept away by the currents as they attempted to rescue them; the currents took the brothers and they never resurfaced. Both of their bodies were recovered by the Belize Coast Guard until the following day, Wednesday, May 2, 2012.

Official police reports indicated that the bothers perished in the river after they attempted to save the life of a young girl who was drowning in the river, but family members and eye witnesses refute this information released and told Belize City media that it was not the case.

Residents of San Pedro and close friends of Osbourne Grant are very saddened with this tragic news and send their condolences to his family. Ozzi Grant was a former employee of the Belize Bank, Scotia Bank and San Pedro High School here in Ambergris Caye and was very much involved in sporting events.
