Junior Sailors Battle for National Championships Spot at St. George Caye

St. George’s Caye. August 20, 2013 – The general public is invited out to cheer on the sailors as they make their bids for a spot in the national championship that will be held in November of this year.  Sailors from around the country will converge on St. George’s Caye on Sunday September 1st. Sailing Clubs participating will be Belize City including Liberty, Sea Scouts; Corozal Bay, Placencia, San Pedro, Ambergris; and the newly formed Caye Caulker Sailing Club.

Seven other races will include the single handed SunFish, Lasers, Picos, high performance multihulls and the venerable Sea Scout Bosuns.  Traditional racing dories are also expected. Pre-registration closed on 9th August but all sailboat enthusiasts are welcome to enter (However, only pre-registered sailors will receive prizes.)

All twelve races will be launched from single start line in front of the St George’s Caye Cemetery.  The Optimist will finish after the second windward leg on the trapezoid course and the other classes on a triangular course using the same start line as the finish line.

This 4th Battle of Saint Georges Caye Regatta is in commemoration of the battle on 1798 and is being hosted by the Belize Sailing Association on St George’s Caye under the patronage of His Excellency the Governor General, Sir Colville Young.

Races start promptly at 9 am on Sunday with amazing spectator access in front the the historic St. George’s Caye Cemetery.  The event will be accompanied by festivities on the shore, including the opening ceremonies for September celebrations. The reigning Queen of the Bay, accompanied by the 2013 candidates, will preside over the prize giving that is scheduled for 3pm.
