Parents Called to be More Vigilant of Children’s Safety
The National Committee for Families and Children (NCFC) issued a press release expressing deep concern over the random devastating residential fires that are apparently becoming the new trend of claiming the innocent lives of children lately.
The National Committee for Families and Children (NCFC), launched in 1994, is the lead national agency and major advisory body to the government on families and children issues. To that end, one of its obligations to our children is to ensure the safety and protection of our children at all times. In fact, Article 36 of the CRC states that children have the right to protection and safety.
On that very premise, NCFC issued a press release this week expressing how deeply bothered they are by these random devastating residential fires that are apparently becoming the new trend of claiming the innocent lives of children lately. In just about one month, fire has gutted several homes claiming the lives of two children and therefore, NCFC is calling particularly on parents, to be more vigilant about your child’s surroundings and whereabouts at all times.
“As parents, we ought to be mindful that children will be children; children are very curious and experimental,” stated NCFC. “While children have the right to leisure and play, parents must ensure that the environment is safe and things that are considered hazardous to children be put away in places that are not easily reached. Some of these things include sharp blunt objects, poison, matches, candles, flammables contents and electrical wires/devices. As parents/guardians, we cannot take things for granted or assume that children are aware of the harm that can occur when in possession of these items or unsupervised.”
In accordance with Part II Section 5-(1) of the Families and Children Act, Chapter 173 Revised Laws of Belize Edition 2011, states “it should be the duty of a parent, guardian, or any person having custody of the child to maintain that child and in particular, that duty gives a child the right to a proper life. Subsection 5-(2) also states that “it shall be the duty of any person having custody of a child to use his best efforts to protect the child from discrimination, violence, abuse and neglect”.
NCFC says it regrets the excruciating demise of these vibrant and energetic children and extends its deepest condolences to all the families. “As we continue to care for our children, it is with hope that as parents/ guardians, we will do all that we can to ensure and if possible, avoid these kinds of incidents from reoccurring.
