Nurses in Belize join the world in celebrating Nurses’ Week from May 6th to 12th under the International Council of Nurses theme, Nurses: A Voice to Lead – Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
Nurses are the cornerstone of healthcare and function in the prevention of illness, promotion of health and the alleviation of suffering throughout ones lifetime. The actions of nurses are therefore vital in achieving the third goal of the Sustainable Development Goals, which is to “ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages”. Furthermore, nurses often times address other social determinants of health including poverty, nutrition, education and climate action, which are also sustainable development goals.
The strength in numbers, skills and the strategic and economic contribution of nurses has continued to impact the lives and health of this country; and as such, it is equally important that nurses’ voices are heard as a part of a multidisciplinary team of health professionals.
Countrywide activities were planned to recognize nurses throughout the week, which culminated with a nursing conference at the Muffles College Auditorium on today, Friday, May 12 and a visit to the Meeting of House of Representatives to honor a nursing icon and the Speaker of the House, Mrs. Laura Tucker-Longsworth.
The Central Health Region Nurse leaders also gathered at the San Pedro Polyclinic for their monthly meeting and to also celebrate their day!
The Minister of Health, Hon. Pablo Marin; the Deputy Director of Health Services with responsibility for Nursing, Mrs. Augustina Elijio, including the wider management and staff of the Ministry of Health, along with Ambergris Today wishes all nurses in Belize a Happy Nurses’ Week!
