Belize Diabetes Association of New York Made Annual Foot Care Mission to Belize

The Belize Diabetes Association of New York (BDANY) made its annual Foot Care Mission to Belize from July 3rd to 9th, 2017.  This year’s mission brought 14 volunteers of which seven were members of the BDANY and seven were medical personnel comprising of a surgeon and registered nurses, with emphasis in foot care, and a diabetic educator.

mission provided screening and treatment to over 300 people in Belize City and Dangriga and educated over 50 nurses and doctors. Dr. Steven Wells, Chief Executive Officer of the Diabetic Foot Center Group, was even able to save a young man from losing a limb. He performed the surgery on July 3rd at Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital in Belize City and was successful. The group also met with Dr. Marvin Manzanero, Director of Health Services and discussed the long term goals of the BDANY and The Diabetic Foot Center Group; the team left very hopeful for future endeavors.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs applauds the work of the BDANY and believes that these efforts shows that the partnership with Belizeans in the Diaspora can bring great healthcare and education to the people of Belize.
