San Pedro Town Celebrates 33 Years of Township

Our beautiful town of San Pedro has come a long way, from a quaint fishing village to a booming tourism destination, Today, Monday, November 27, 2017, we celebrate its 33rd year of township. The San Pedro Town Council held a short and informative ceremony at Central Park and in attendance were past mayors and students from various schools on the island.

In his welcome address, Mayor Daniel Guerrero spoke of the islands progress; he reminisced to what San Pedro was back in 1984 when it achieved its town status. He stated that our island has grown tremendously from having one police officer, one high school and one primary school to now having over 5,000 students in various schools throughout the island.

“We have gone from a fishing village to a totally tourism-dependent municipality,” stated Mayor Guerrero. “I remember when the furthest hotel up north was Journey’s End and now we have more hotel rooms in the island than anywhere in the country. We are the fastest growing municipality with the highest growth rate at 17% per annum.” He ended by reminding us to be grateful for our achievements for he sees that the island is on the right path for a better and brighter future.

Addressing the gathering at the park was past mayor Pedro Salazar and school presentations were by Isla Bonita Elementary School, Ambergris Caye Elementary School and Holy Cross Anglican School. Delivering the vote of thanks was councilor Flora Ancona. There were several booths on display with posters, pictures of past mayors and councilors and with work conducted by the Town Council.
