Boat To Boat Outreach At Turneffe Atoll Focusing On Climate Change

The Belize Fisheries Department along with Mccap Fisheries and Tasa Turneffe Belize conducted boat-to-boat educational outreach to fishers on August 6th – 8th, 2019, to discuss climate change and how it’s affecting the fisher’s livelihood.

The outreach is part of MCCAP’s ‘Climate Change – Let’s Save Our Belize’ campaign, aimed at raising awareness among fishers on its effects.

Many fishers explained that because of the warmer waters, fish species are no longer in abundance in traditional areas, as they are moving further away in search of cooler waters. They are also concerned about coral bleaching, as corals are home to many marine species.

Despite the evident changes, many have expressed satisfaction so far in their daily catch of the Spiny lobster (Panulirus argus).
