Know Your Worth

– by Seleni Perez – Have you ever felt worthless? Do yo feel like an incomplete person thought to be the black sheep of the flock, and as much as you try to fit in all you do is fall out? You are not alone; we all have that point in life where we feel misunderstood or odd amongst our peers. But that’s okay! You don’t have to be too hard on yourself to be liked or get the approval through the standards of others. Don’t allow the opinions of others define you.

At this instant if I would tell you that I have never felt left out I would be lying. The truth is that at many points in my life I have tried fitting in. Once, I pretended to be a basketball enthusiast, to make story short, I joined the school’s team. Big mistake! It turned out I was not built to be athletic. There was also this other time, I joined a small music band. I played the role of a singer and ended up singing in front of a school just to face the heavy criticism of many around me. It was a complete embarrassment!

This made me realize that in life we should stop focusing on fitting in and instead work on standing out so that we can shine our own light rather than being the burnt out fire that has turn to ashes. Find yourself and discover your talents to enhance a unique you. Do not compare yourself to others. Find your own path.

I know many times we are pressured into following a certain routine, snug up to our own ideas and perceptions; not allowing a change in our bad habits. However, in order to see a change we must renew our minds and transform our lives. Sometimes, we expect to see a change in others but fail to realize that we must also make a complete turnaround in our lives and acknowledge our faults.

Yes, I said faults – it is hard to accept our wrongs, but that is part of being human. We are not perfect, and until we truly accept this we will find a transformation in our lives.

Until we do this we will understand our worth. The true value we have in Christ. We are all not the same. We are people with different talents and gifts. Imagine having a world full of me or people like you, no variety. That would certainly be a boring world. It is our duty to identify our uniqueness but it is also our responsibility to acknowledge others for theirs and also accept and respect each other for who we are.

Be someone’s light when they are hopeless. We were all created with a purpose. As Romans 12:2 says, “Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is – his good, pleasing and perfect will.”

So next time you are trying to figure out how to get the approval of others, reset your mind and remember you are valuable, worthy and unique in God’s eyes.
