Sports have always been a powerful tool for shaping the lives of young people. They teach discipline, teamwork, and perseverance while providing a safe space for kids to channel their energy and grow both physically and mentally. That’s why I was very pleased to see the unveiling of the newly renovated basketball court at Boca del Rio Beach Park. For me, this isn’t just about a new court—it’s about the incredible opportunities it brings to the youth of San Pedro and how we, as a community, can come together to create meaningful programs for our kids.
The renovation of the court is a shining example of what collaboration can achieve. Thanks to the efforts of Will Mitchell from RE/MAX Belize Real Estate and the San Pedro Town Council, the project delivered a brand-new court equipped with sturdy rims and fresh bleachers. This isn’t just a physical upgrade—it’s a much-needed improvement for the island’s sporting community. It’s a space where kids can come together, have fun, and hone their skills in a safe and engaging environment.
Will Mitchell, joined by Town Councilor Adaly Ayuso and Mayor Wally Nuñez, led the festivities of the court’s inauguration, turning the morning into a vibrant celebration filled with games and basketball lessons. Mitchell himself called it a “beautiful moment,” and I couldn’t agree more. Seeing the youth of our island embrace this new facility reaffirms just how vital sports are in their lives.
Basketball Academy in the Works
Even more exciting are the plans that extend beyond the court. Ayuso shared her vision for a basketball academy that will nurture young talent and organize tournaments. She’s already spearheaded successful academies and events for football, softball, and volleyball, and now basketball is set to join the lineup. I admire her leadership and dedication to creating platforms for our kids to excel in sports, and it’s something we, as a community, should rally behind.
But it doesn’t stop there. Will Mitchell hinted at future enhancements for the court, showing a commitment to continuous improvement. “From here on, we want to continue making it better,” he said—a sentiment that speaks to the importance of ongoing investment in our youth.
The day was made even more special by the presence of basketball stars Nigel Jones and D’Von Campbell from the Belize City Defenders. They joined in the fun, playing alongside the young athletes and sharing their expertise. Moments like these are unforgettable for kids, showing them the heights they can reach through dedication and hard work.
I feel a renewed sense of hope and determination for the youth of San Pedro as the town’s sports council has taken great strides in providing more sporting outlets for the youth. Sports have the power to transform lives, and with community support, we can create more opportunities like this. Let’s continue to work together—businesses, local leaders, and residents alike—to develop robust sporting programs that will inspire and empower the next generation. After all, when we invest in our kids, we’re investing in the future of our island.
