Old Timer or Modern Sanpedrano? #4

By Angel Nuñez

You know you are an old timer Sanpedrano if you are not afraid of smoke.  You are not afraid of smoke because your parents and probably you too used to cook in an outside facility on a fire hearth (fogon) with coconut husks and firewood as your charcoal.
..…And you know you are a modern Sanpedrano if you are afraid to even get close to a barbecue pit which has a minimum of smoke. You are now using an electric stove and a microwave oven.

You know you are an old timer Sanpedrano if you like to walk all about town without shoes.  The old time Sanpedrano walked about barefooted to work, to school, to mass and even to weddings and formal events.  Check our Area Rep. Hon. Manuel Heredia as he goes about barefooted since he was raised in that comfortable way.
…..And you know you are a present day Sanpedrano if you own several pairs of shoes, tennis shoes and sandals and won’t go out with some cover on your white feet which haven’t been kissed by the sunlight.

You know you are an old timer Sanpedrano if
you are not afraid of mosquitoes.  You grew up when there were tons of mosquitoes during the rainy season and everybody went about their business as normal and used smoke to repel them.
…..And you know you are a modern Sanpedrano if as soon as you feel one mosquito you start complaining about those “darn mosquitoes” and you pull out a dozen different brands of mosquito repellents.

You know you are a modern Sanpedrano if you are not afraid of the sun.  In your days nobody worried about sun block lotions and you could spend hours, days and weeks (all your life) in the sun without ever a thought of any skin damage.
…And you know you are a present day Sanpedrano if As soon as you plan a simple outing in the sun like going fishing, you are pulling out your sun block, your UV protection stuff, S.P.F.100 and now S.P.F.110.  You are also pulling out your long sleeves, special caps with hood, shades, so much that when you are through you look like an astronaut or some clown getting ready for a show.

You know you are an old timer Sanpedrano if your mom used to make flour tortillas, fried jacks or Johnny cakes every evening. And to throw a special evening your mom made caprichos, powdah bun, (powdered buns) and those delicious crispy ojaldras.
…..And you know you are a modern Sanpedrano if you now buy your pack of special white bread or whole wheat bread from La Popular Bakery or some sweat bread from Annie’s Pastries at the tricycle down the street.

You know you are an old timer Sanpedrano if you mom used to delight you with some delicious sweet treat like fudge, tableta, coco brut (coto brut in Creole), pinion, and sweet potato pudding (pudin de camote)
…..And you know you are a modern Sanpedrano if your sweet tooth include such things as Caye lime pie, better than sex, tres leches, Oreo Cookie Pie

Hey folks, it’s very easy to make up your mind whether you are a modern or old timer in San Pedro, right?  There is such a big difference of life in San Pedro 25 years ago.
