Caye Caulker is in a total state of crisis as they have been experiencing both water and electricity problems. The water supply plant could take days for water to be fully restored to the island and Belize Electricity Limited is working arduously to replace a faulty generator.
Belize Water Services issued a press release on Monday, December 29, 2019, stating that the Caye Caulker Reverse Osmosis Water Treatment Plant experienced a shut down due to a broken main drive shaft, and that water could take days to be restored due to a part that is being shipped from abroad.
Caye Caulker received two water trucks, one that holds 4,500 gallons of water to supply the hoteliers and a truck with 12,000 gallons to fill the reservoir at the BWS site and was to be distributed to the rest of the community.
Another pressing issue was that over the past few days Caye Caulker had been experiencing intermittent power outages and the Belize Electricity Limited issues a press release stating that they have been working to resolve the power supply issues on the island. The company has had to conducting load shedding during the evening peak hours to compensate for the loss in generation capacity. BEL is asking residents of Caye Caulker for patience as they are working diligently to complete repairs to restore a stable power supply to the island.
In light of all this the Caye Caulker Branch of the Belize Tourism Industry Association (BTIA) is calling for immediate actions to be taken by the Government of Belize to have the matter addressed.
